I enjoyed how this article beautifully explores the significance of funeral rites in the Ismaili tradition, balancing history, spirituality, and community. The discussion on tradition and modernity is particularly insightful, making complex concepts accessible. The emphasis on communal mourning highlights the deep connections within the faith. It’s a thoughtful piece that not only informs but also encourages reflection on the deeper meaning of rituals. A valuable article during this time. Thank you.
@Karim Suleman - Imam Ali (A.S), chose to lie in the bed of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to protect him from those seeking to harm him. When the enemies came to kill the Prophet (SAW), and they asked where is Muhammad (SAW). At this time, Mowla Ali (AS) responded, "You did not entrust Muhammad to me," rather than saying that the Prophet (SAW) had migrated to Mecca. The Imam of the Time is responsible to protect his progeny - the world only knows when Imam-e-Zaman wishes. Ya Ali Madad.
I am strugguling reconcilling a statement mowlana Shah Karim made to a journalist regarding selection of the next Imam when he was appointed. Imam Shah Karim said that he had no inclination that he was going to be the 49 th Imam. My question is does the intellectual soul get passed to the next Imam or is it already present? sorry but I am struggling with this concept and my question may not make sense
We should not base our religious and theological beliefs on public statements the Imam makes to Western journalists. The Imams have always practice taqiyya -- they have said: "taqiyya is our religion and the religion of our ancestors.'
Thank you for your respinse. With all due respect, I have trouble reconcilling the notion That Shah Karim was dishonest with the journalist. In that same interview, MHI said that the west does not understand Ismaili theism. I believe many including myself don't have a good solid understanding either. So is it possible that the next Imam only becomes aware of the Nur, when they get appointed? thank you
@Bayat - Fatiha, Namaz-e-Mayyat, and Ziyarat are rituals that offer solace as loved ones invoke divine support, with the intent of benefiting the soul of the deceased through our prayers. While these rituals are integral to any funeral, their impact on souls varies. The soul of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as he noted on his final breath, resides in the "companionship of the High." Thus, our Salawat for Muhammad (SAW) serves primarily for our personal benefit. Prophets and Imams do not require our invocations, but these rituals bring blessings to those who partake in them. Ya Ali Madad.

But then what is the point of having Fatiha read? Fatiha for the marhoom is for peace, whereas an Imam is the peace
